What does a typical Nature Kindy session look like? The Cottonwood educators will lead the nature session, through a predictable but flexible routine for young children which will include, greetings on the mat, sharing of special stories and activities, safety discussions, free play and exploration, morning tea and finish off with circle time of songs. Each session is based on the ideas and curiosities that arise from children’s interests as the program is child led and inquiry based so each day will look a little different. This may include bushland exploration, tree climbing, play with shelters and rope, bushcraft, nature craft, muddy play, and so much more. Possibilities are endless. Families can drop off children for these sessions. This is aimed for children aged 3-5 years.

Where are the sessions held?Currently we have sessions in Currumbin/Tugun and Elanora. Once enrolled, families will be given exact locations. There is a lot of value for children to revisit the same sites for extension of play and learning so it is our intention to stay at the site each week for a minumum of 5 weeks, possibly the whole term. This will depend on the interests of the children. Locations will be all around the central location of Currumbin.

How do I know the program is safe for my young child to participate in?Educators ensure children can play and learn in a safe space through risk management – each site and activity has been assessed and control measures put in place to minimise injuries. And most importantly children are supported to develop risk intelligence – that is develop skills to independently take risks, by understanding the hazards, exercising decision making and learning how to keep their bodies safe. Educators play and learn beside children and families to ensure safety is maintained. Educators have been trained in risky play and safety management.
-
Are the facilitators trained? Our Playgroups are facilitated by qualified and experienced nature play educators. All our educators are experienced and have a passion for nature play. Educators hold a Blue card and first aid qualifications.
-
What do I need to bring?Once you have booked, you will receive an enrolment pack with all the information you need to know, including what to bring. But essentially just bring along your family and some snacks to eat and we will provide all the resources you need for the session. We do recommend families provide suitable wet weather gear for those rainy days so the adventure can continue on those wet days.

What happens when it rains?Cottonwood Learning is an all weather outdoor program and wet weather is where some of the best fun occurs! There is a lot of discovery and explorations from dripping rain, puddles or mud! The only weather we don't go out in is thunderstorms and we will advise everyone if this occurs. Educators will of course set up a rain shelter for a dry retreat but we encourage everyone to wear wet weather gear - coats and pants and gumboots.
